Transportation is one area seeing changes. Three of those changes are highlighted below.

  • Trucker’s Uniform Speed: Truckers traveling through Illinois will be able to drive the same speed as other vehicles on most four lane highways in Illinois. The new law is a further step towards uniform speeds on roadways in Illinois. This expands the law that was passed in 2009 authorizing trucks to travel 65 mph on rural, divided interstate highways – the same speed as other vehicles. The change affects both U.S. and state highways outside of Chicago and the five surrounding “collar” counties.
  • Motorcycle Red Lights: Allows motorcyclists stopped at a red light to proceed through the light if, after waiting a reasonable length of time, the red light fails to change to green. This is in response to increased concerns and problems with road light censors not picking up the weight of motorcycles at intersections.
  • Backseat seat belts: Legislation was passed earlier this year mandating the use of seat belts in the back seats of vehicles. With this new law it is now required that seat belts be worn for all ages in front and back seats.
